14 Indicted in Alleged Cocaine Ring Operating Within Pennsylvania State University Fraternities

Kathmandu— Fourteen individuals have been indicted by a US grand jury for their alleged involvement in a drug ring operating within two fraternities at Pennsylvania State University (PSU). The scheme reportedly involved bringing large quantities of cocaine from Philadelphia and New York, cutting and packaging the drugs primarily at the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternity houses, and distributing them to students. Thirteen of the defendants were students between 2023 and 2024, while one is a parent accused of obstructing the investigation; authorities allege that some pledges were required to participate in drug preparation as part of their initiation into the fraternities.

Details of the Alleged Drug Operation

According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, the group operated as a “coordinated and highly-profitable drug-trafficking crew” centered around senior fraternity members, other brothers, and pledges. Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson were identified by the attorney general’s office as the primary suppliers of cocaine. Investigators claim that substantial amounts of the drug were transported from Philadelphia and New York to be processed at the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi houses before distribution among PSU students.

University and Fraternity Responses

Pennsylvania State University released a statement expressing horror over the allegations, emphasizing that such criminal activity has no place on campus. Andrea Dowhower, vice president for Student Affairs, stated the university would fully cooperate with law enforcement and review Delta Upsilon fraternity. Sigma Chi is not currently recognized by PSU, placing it outside of the university’s direct oversight. Justin Kirk, Executive Director of Delta Upsilon, confirmed that those charged who were members have been expelled or suspended. “We will continue to work closely with the university on any investigative efforts,” he said.

Hazing Concerns and Recent Incidents

The case highlights ongoing concerns surrounding hazing practices within US college fraternities. Fraternities, traditionally selective social organizations, have faced scrutiny for excessive partying and initiation rituals that sometimes involve dangerous or illegal activities. In February, three members of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Northern Arizona University were charged in connection with the death of a student during a hazing ritual.

All 14 defendants have been arrested as part of “Operation Drugs Unlimited,” and legal proceedings are ongoing. Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the alleged drug ring and any potential involvement beyond those already indicted.
