Alan Wald’s ‘Bohemian Professor’ Explores Left-Wing Artists and Intellectuals

Kathmandu— For decades, Alan Wald has been a leading scholar of left-wing literature and thought in America. His latest work, explored through a critical lens by one reviewer, delves into the lives and works of novelists, poets, and screenwriters who embraced radical politics—often alongside unconventional lifestyles—and navigated the complexities of 20th-century American culture. Wald’s research reveals how these “Bohemian” figures grappled with shifting ideologies, historical disappointments, and personal struggles, from the fervor of the 1930s to the disillusionment following the Cold War.

A History of Radical Bohemia

The intersection of left-wing politics and bohemian lifestyles is a long-standing one. Wald notes that many adherents to progressive causes have historically embraced nonconformity in various forms, including unconventional relationships and artistic expression—values often at odds with social conservatism. This blend of radicalism and free thinking didn’t become widely accepted as defiance until the 1960s, but it was a consistent undercurrent throughout the 20th century.

From SDS to Heretical Marxism

Wald's own political journey began with involvement in Students for a Democratic Society and continued through various socialist organizations. However, his views were shaped by influences beyond orthodox Trotskyism, including the New Left Review and independent Marxist thinkers like Ernest Mandel and Tariq Ali. He identifies as an existentialist philosopher and a critic of traditional communist ideologies.

Literary Landscapes of Disillusionment

Wald’s scholarship focuses on writers who navigated complex political landscapes. He examines figures like James T. Farrell, whose work reflected compassion for working-class life even after his association with the Social Democrats USA, and disillusioned Communists who continued to embrace a Marxist vision while pushing artistic boundaries. A recurring theme is how historical events—such as the rise of fascism—impacted these writers’ optimism and creative output.

Hollywood's Radical Past

The reviewer notes that had Wald focused on screenwriters, the picture would have been markedly different. Hollywood in the late 1930s and early 1950s was a hotbed of left-wing thought, with many Jewish writers embracing communism and participating actively in the Screenwriters Guild. These individuals enjoyed relative success and camaraderie before facing political repression during the Red Scare. They often looked back fondly on this period, even as their faith in the Soviet Union waned.

Noir, Science Fiction, and a New Left

The postwar era saw a shift toward psychological realism and noir aesthetics in American literature and film, reflecting a growing disillusionment with the promise of collective progress. Some writers found new avenues for expression in science fiction, while others became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Wald ultimately identifies signs of a revitalized socialist left emerging today, offering a message of hope despite decades of disappointment.

Wald’s book offers a detailed and nuanced exploration of the lives and works of artists who sought to reconcile radical politics with creative expression, leaving behind a rich legacy for future generations.
