Kathmandu— Nepal’s Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security, Sita Badi, instructed relevant agencies on Monday to conduct a feasibility study for developing Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu into a modernized, safe, clean, green, inclusive, and citizen-friendly public centre. The directive followed an inspection of the area’s various facilities, including goat and vegetable markets, gardens, exhibition halls, stalls, commercial spaces, parking areas, and public restrooms, to assess their current condition and potential for improvement. Minister Badi sought information regarding the utilization and management of existing structures, trade operations, revenue generation, and overall benefits provided to both the state and citizens.

Inspection of Bhrikutimandap Facilities

Minister Badi personally inspected a range of facilities within the Bhrikutimandap area, gathering firsthand information about their current status. This included assessments of the goat and vegetable markets, the garden spaces, exhibition halls, commercial stalls, open green areas, parking provisions, cleanliness standards, public toilet facilities, and pedestrian walkways. Her inspection aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the existing infrastructure and identify areas needing attention.

Focus on Maximizing Public Space

During her visit, Minister Badi emphasized the importance of maximizing the use of Bhrikutimandap’s available space and structures. She believes that this important public property located in the heart of Kathmandu should evolve beyond its current limitations to better serve the needs of citizens. According to her personal secretariat, she wants to see a transformation that enhances both functionality and accessibility for all.

The minister’s directive initiates a study phase aimed at formulating a plan for the comprehensive development of Bhrikutimandap into a modern public centre.
