China Closes Zhangmu Port Near Nepal Border Indefinitely

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— The Government of China has informed Nepali authorities via email that the Zhangmu port, located near Tatopani on the Nepal-China border, will remain closed for an indefinite period. The closure is reportedly due to concerns over a potential river-based disaster following recent flooding in the Bhotekoshi River. This decision further disrupts trade between Nepal and China as the country prepares for its major festivals.

Reasons Behind Closure

According to Tul Bahadur Pandey, a customs officer at Tatopani Customs Office, the Chinese authorities cited potential disaster concerns in their email. The closure is believed to be precautionary amid fears of further river-based disasters following recent flooding in the Bhotekoshi River.

Impact on Trade

The indefinite closure of Zhangmu port has significantly disrupted trade between Nepal and China, particularly as major festivals like Dashain and Tihar approach. The business community fears that supplies to Nepal will be affected, exacerbating the existing challenges in trans-border trade.

Previous Disruptions

The Tatopani point was previously considered an alternative trading route to Rasuwagadhi customs after it was devastated by a recent flood. However, import and export via this route had been almost suspended for 40 days following landslides on the Araniko Highway in June.

Cargo containers bound for Nepal are currently stranded in Nyalam as a result of the port's closure.
