High Risk of Flash Floods Predicted in Multiple Nepalese Districts

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— The Flood Forecasting Division at the Centre of Hydrology and Water Resources Research in Nepal has reported that water levels in several rivers including the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli are expected to rise today, posing a significant risk of flash flooding. Saraswati Bista, a flood expert from the division, warned residents in riverbank areas across multiple districts to remain highly alert as there is a high chance of flooding due to potential rainfall and the threat of a lake bursting near the Nepal-China border.

Affected Districts

The risk of flash floods extends to numerous districts including Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Ramechhap, Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, Kavrepalanchok, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, Dhading, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun, Lamjung, Manang, Kaski, Syangja, Parbat, Myagdi, Baglung, Rukum East, Rukum West, Rolpa, Salyan, Surkhet, Jajarkot, Darchula, Baitadi, Dadeldhura, and Kanchanpur. The Division has advised residents in these areas to stay alert.

Risk of Lake Bursting

Saraswati Bista highlighted the potential for a lake near the Nepal-China border to burst at any time, which could exacerbate flooding conditions. She urged the public to remain vigilant until further notice and advised them to be prepared for possible evacuation if necessary.
