In 2024, the U.S. porn industry revenue was estimated at $13 billion by BedBible, while the global market reached an estimated $100 billion. Despite its growth, the industry faces increasing legal scrutiny and technological challenges, including laws mandating age verification to prevent minors from accessing adult content.

Historical Evolution of Pornography

Once confined to seedy shops in down-market areas, pornography has been democratized through the advent of home video. By the 1980s, new media entertainment products like cable TV and online services included a strong adult component. DIY or user-generated content (UGC) emerged with Polaroid cameras and Xerox copiers, culminating with home videos that accounted for 30 percent of the market by 1986.

Current Market Dynamics

Today's porn market is vast but opaque. Males make up more than four-fifths (82%) of viewers, while females account for less than one-fifth (18%). The average viewing time on Xvideo is 15 minutes. Despite its popularity, the industry faces challenges such as low-resolution digital video feeds and the need for age verification laws to protect minors.

Legal Battles and Age Verification

In recent years, states have enacted stringent laws requiring commercial pornography websites to perform strict age verification. In 2023, Texas adopted HB 1181, mandating age verification for any website where more than one-third of the content is deemed harmful to minors. The Supreme Court ruled in Free Speech Coalition, Inc. v. Paxton that states have the authority to restrict access to adult websites like Pornhub and XVideos.

Technological Challenges: AI and CSAM

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has introduced new challenges for the industry. By June 2025, NCMEC reported a 1,325 percent increase in AI-generated Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) reports between 2023 and 2024, with over 440,000 new reports involving AI-generated CSAM. At least 36 teenage boys have taken their lives due to sextortion since 2021.

The porn industry continues to evolve amidst legal and technological challenges, with states increasingly mandating age verification laws and addressing the rise of AI-generated content.
