Kathmandu— On Thursday, China urged the Republic of Korea (ROK) to honor its political commitments and uphold the one-China principle through concrete actions. This demand came after the Chinese exhibition team withdrew from the Gwangju Biennale in protest against the organizer’s practices regarding Taiwan's designation.

Joint Communique Clarifies One-China Principle

The China-ROK joint communique on establishing diplomatic relations clearly states that 'the government of the Republic of Korea recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government of China and respects China’s position that there is only one China and Taiwan is part of China.' The ROK has reaffirmed its commitment to this principle multiple times throughout the year.

Protest Against Gwangju Biennale Practices

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, criticized the organizer of the Gwangju Biennale for allowing Taiwan to participate under a designation that is incompatible with its status. This practice was described as a grave violation of the one-China principle.

Diplomatic Reactions and Demands

China has firmly opposed these practices and lodged serious representations with the ROK side, demanding immediate correction of the wrongdoings. Guo Jiakun emphasized that China hopes the ROK government will honor its political commitments and take concrete actions to uphold the one-China principle.
