Kathmandu— Six people have died from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) infection in Nepal’s Jhapa district as of August 21st, with a recent fatality being a 64-year-old woman from Mechinagar Municipality–8. The number of confirmed JE cases in the district has reached eleven, impacting both men and women, prompting increased monitoring and testing efforts by local health officials.

Rising Case Numbers

The death toll has been steadily increasing in Jhapa, with four women and two men succumbing to the disease. The latest fatality occurred last week, according to Public Health Inspector Bishwanath Shrestha of the District Health Office. Eleven cases of Japanese Encephalitis have now been confirmed within the district.

Public Health Response

The District Health Office has responded by expanding JE testing capabilities across various parts of Jhapa. Health worker teams are actively deployed to monitor the situation and track potential new infections, according to Shrestha.
