Imran Khan Returned To Jail Following Medical Examination

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been transferred back to prison after undergoing a medical checkup at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, following an order from the Pakistan Supreme Court. The court had directed that Khan, founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, be moved to the hospital within 48 hours and remain there until September 16; however, he was taken after the deadline passed. Concerns over his deteriorating health prompted the order, but authorities have now declared him medically fit to return to incarceration.

Supreme Court Order And Hospital Transfer

The Pakistan Supreme Court had ordered Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital on Tuesday, citing concerns for his well-being. The PTI party threatened legal action if the government did not comply with the court's 48-hour deadline. He was ultimately moved to the hospital just after midnight early Friday morning, past the stipulated timeframe.

Medical Evaluation And Findings

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated on X (formerly Twitter) that a team of doctors – including specialists in ophthalmology, cardiology, and general medicine – conducted a thorough examination of Khan. According to Tarar, the medical team determined that Khan was medically fit. Following this assessment, he was transferred back to Adiala Jail.

Concerns Over Health And Allegations Of Political Motivation

Khan’s lawyers had previously expressed concerns about his deteriorating health while in custody, specifically noting a significant loss of vision in his right eye. The government appealed to the Supreme Court to reconsider its order, arguing that medical reports did not indicate any condition requiring immediate treatment. Khan and his supporters maintain that the charges against him are politically motivated and designed to prevent his return to politics.

Security And Public Response

Hundreds of security personnel were deployed along the 30-kilometer route between Adiala Jail and Shifa International Hospital, with tight security measures in place throughout Khan’s brief stay at the hospital. Despite the late hour, supporters lined the roads to cheer as his convoy passed.

Khan remains incarcerated at Adiala Jail while facing convictions related to selling state gifts; his party has been barred from participating in elections.
